- Enable Cost Explorer and cost allocation tags, define cost categories and account ownership, choose a consistent cost basis such as amortized or net amortized, and establish saved reports for services, products, teams and environments.
- Compare current and prior periods, group by the smallest useful dimension, drill from service into usage type and account or tag, validate anomalies against deployments and detailed billing data, and assign an accountable owner.
- Use forecasts and recommendations as planning inputs, create Budgets and anomaly alerts for action, cache API results, track realized savings separately, and move to Data Exports or Cost and Usage Reports with Athena for line-item analysis.
AWS Cost Explorer best practices
- Choose and label the cost metric consistently—unblended, net, amortized or net amortized—because mixing views can create false trends and misleading owner comparisons.
- Account for data latency: current-month data is generally available in about 24 hours and refreshes at least daily, so Cost Explorer is not a real-time spend circuit breaker.
- Restrict API access because it exposes account cost data, filter and cache API queries because each paginated request is charged, and treat 80 percent prediction-interval forecasts as estimates rather than commitments.
